Season 3 of Jujutsu Kaisen is the series at its most intense version. Animations are the best the show has ever had, battles are visceral and impactful, and there is no shortage of epic moments. The overall momentum of the series has always been breakneck, and this season, like the previous ones, is not concerned with offering breathing room between the action.

The problem with this relentless rhythm is that it trades character development for action, leaving no time for the cast outside of combat. Mai Zenin is a prime example. She barely appears after Season 1, only to return and sacrifice herself for Maki. While the show contextualizes it in the moment, the emotional leap feels sudden. The series skips the progression needed to connect their Season 1 resentment and this sacrifice.

The Culling Games suffer from this lack of downtime as well. The mechanics are dumped on the audience so rapidly that the exposition dump becomes one of the hardest segments to understand in the entire season. Everything is so rushed that a new rule is introduced before there is time to read and digest the previous one. The same issue plagues the participants who are introduced and disposed of so quickly it is hard to follow and understand the stakes at play, reducing the impact of battles.

However, JJK retains its greatest strength: character development through action. Maki, Megumi, and Yuta show real growth in their battles. Maki’s awakening is thrilling and gets highlighted by the visual parallel with Toji. It is also especially satisfying to see Megumi shake off the “Potential Man” allegations by winning a grueling fight without considering summonning Mahoraga. Finally, Yuta’s stalemate-breaking appearance stands as the best battle of the arc, bringing a fantastic close to an already action-packed season.

JJK remains peak shonen by maintaining this high-intensity pace. While the lack of breathing room sacrifices deeper development, to ask for a slower pace would be to ask for something other than what JJK is, as the breakneck momentum is part of what defines the series. Season 3 is no different in this aspect and, if anything, speeds things up even more.
